Cycle parking standards exist to help install better cycle parking. With improved parking and storage, we can continue to promote and support active travel across the UK.

We’ve compiled this guide, with help from Sustrans, to help you understand the guidance and regulations found within UK cycle parking standards to ensure your facilities are compliant and can have a positive impact on active travel.

The document includes a comparison of guidance found in the government’s LTN 1/20, the London Cycling Design Standards, and the Bicycle Association’s standards for public cycle parking.

Within the guide you will find a distilled version of details around accessible cycle parking, two-tier racks, Sheffield stand spacing, and the necessary security measures required to make parking facilities safe and user-friendly.

Ultimately, we don’t want to see anyone being put off from cycling because of inadequate, inaccessible or limited cycle parking.

We worked with Sustrans to help ensure all the information and guidance is independent and cross referenced. Their executive summary on the importance of cycle parking can be found below.

This guide will be regularly updated to reflect new standards that are released, as well as updates to existing guidelines.

From Sustrans:

As people are hit by the cost-of-living crisis, affordable ways of getting around are critical. Amongst other factors, lack of secure cycle parking is a key cause for people choosing to travel by car as opposed to cycling – at a cost many can no longer afford.

Here at Sustrans, our research has found that 60% of residents on low incomes would find access to secure cycle storage at or near home useful to start cycling more. As well as this, 64% of people across the UK would like improved cycling infrastructure that better links with public transport, such as secure cycle parking at train stations.

Ultimately, we don’t want to see anyone being put off from cycling because of inadequate, inaccessible or limited cycle parking. And, although over the last few years there have been improvements, we still need to see an increase in the quality and quantity of cycle storage, particularly at rail and bus stations. We want to see public transport stations acting as active travel hubs, making it easier for commuters, locals and visitors to get active every day.

Sustrans, the charity making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle.
