What’s included with your bike repair station?

By Tito Vidotto

Have you ever been stuck with a flat tyre and no pump? Perhaps your saddle desperately needs adjustment, or your brake levers are slipping?

Although many cyclists might carry tools and pumps with them, they’re costly and are easy to forget, raising an unwanted barrier to entry for those new to cycling.

Bike repair stations can offer crucial relief and support for many, particularly on shorter journeys and commutes.

Developing a vast network of bike repair stations across the UK is helping encourage and promote active travel. They’re highly cost effective and quick to install.

With the knowledge that either at your local high street, library, cafe, swimming pool, or place of work there’s a freely available bike repair station, we can help welcome more people cycling on the roads.

In the UK and Ireland alone, Turvec have installed close to two thousand bike repair stations. From Edinburgh to Plymouth, you’re more likely than ever to encounter one.

Let’s take a look at exactly what is included with the bike repair station, how they’re used, and a run down of custom branding and colours.

What tools are included?

Securely attached with steel cables is a wide selection of tools designed to meet all but the most complex bike maintenance needs.

Here’s the full lineup of tools:

  • Philips screwdriver
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Hex key set
  • Tyre levers with steel core
  • Adjustable spanner
  • Flat wrench 8x10mm and 13x15mm
  • Torx key set (Including T25)

How do I use a bike repair station?

Our bike repair station acts a bit like a self contained bike workshop, with the forks on top of the stand supporting the bike, and the tools allowing anyone to make repairs and adjustments.

By either placing the seatpost between the station support forks, or by hooking the nose of the saddle on the forks if you have lights or bags, the bike will stay in place thanks to gravity and the grippy rubber sheath on the support forks.

Alternatively, you can hang the bike by its top tube if your saddle or seatpost is incompatible.

Finally, the stations can be used in conjunction with our wheel chock, which is a separate unit to hold the bike in place using either the front or rear wheel. This avoids any lifting at all of the bike, and can be especially useful if you just need to pump up your tyre.

Once the bike is in place, identify the tool you need and make the necessary repairs.

What about the pump?

Pumps are either sold separately, or more commonly are integrated with the workstation to form the full bike repair station unit.

They tend to be the most frequently used part of the station, largely because a puncture is the most common fault we suffer on the bike.

It is unfortunately too complicated to include patches and repair kits with bike repair stations, but often adding extra air can be enough to either get you back home, or to a bike shop if a new tube or patch is needed.

Our pump has a steel, rubber coated hose for durability, plus a multi-valve adapter for both a Schrader or Presta valve.

The track pump style is much more efficient than any hand pump, therefore reducing the need for excess effort.

Custom branding & colours

As well as the practical benefits listed above, a bike repair station doesn’t need to be an eyesore. In fact, with a range of standard and bespoke colours and your council or company logo, they can look great.

Ideally located in high-traffic cycling areas, such as cycle parking facilities, high streets, shopping centres, and other well-used public buildings, it is important that bike repair stations stand out so people know where to find them.

We can include your logo free of charge, plus to any of our wide range of standard RAL colours.

If the station is within a bike store or private building, consider matching the RAL to your existing palette to add an extra splash of colour.
