Discover why we’re backing Cycle UK’s important new Cycle Friendly Buildings initiative
Cycling to work offers a host of health, social and environmental benefits that help our society.
Creating high-quality cycling infrastructure is integral to giving workers the confidence that they can participate in the ever-growing active commuting movement.
That is why we are delighted to support Cycle UK’s newly announced Cycle Friendly Buildings accreditation programme.
The new scheme has been designed to recognise office buildings that support and promote cycling, with the strength of the UK Cycling brand delivering an impactful endorsement for compliant properties.
Much needed independent verification
Independent verification ensures credibility, objectivity and trust, helping to guarantee that cycling facilities meet high standards and deliver real value to users.
By introducing their Cycle Friendly Buildings accreditation, Cycling UK enables prospective tenants or purchasers to make informed decisions that can support positive ESG outcomes.
On the launch of the scheme, Sam Turney, product and sales manager at Cycling UK, said: “Building on our years of accrediting employers with the European Cyclist’s Federation, we have taken the decision to apply our knowledge and expertise to a wider audience.
“We feel that the standards of cycle storage and end of trip facilities can be vastly improved for most buildings.
“This accreditation is truly independent and objective with its aim to help building occupiers identify buildings with adequate facilities.”
Gaining accreditation has already proved highly popular, with successful nominees gaining access to bespoke, ongoing support from Cycling UK, among other benefits.
However, developers hoping to game the system may be left disappointed: “Just installing bike racks doesn’t guarantee accreditation.
“We take a detailed look at the facilities based upon a strict criterion in line with best practice, ensuring they are safe and correctly installed by reputable manufactures prioritising quality, usability and safety with adequate space around the installation.
“Our Cycle Friendly Building accreditation carries our heritage and creditability, giving both building owners and those that cycle an independent verification of the facilities in the building.”

“By setting high standards for cycling facilities, Cycling UK is enhancing the cycling experience, fostering healthier work environments, and reducing British business’s environmental impact.
